Abstract In the Greek and more generally European area, the comorbidity of depressive symptoms and alcohol use is quite common, as well as having special characteristics and a strong correlation with concepts such as self-esteem and strategies for dealing with stress. The purpose of the present quantitative study was to investigate the relationship of depressive symptomatology and self-esteem with alcohol use and abuse in the adult general population, as well as the potential mediating role of coping strategies of stress in the aforementioned relationships. A total of 353 participants took part in the study, of which 224 were women (63.5%) and 129 were men (36.5%), with an average age of 36.08 years, (SD ± 14.03 years). Participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), and the Coping Strategies of Stress Scale (Brief COPE). According to the results, depressive symptomatology was positively correlated with alcohol use and avoidance coping strategies of stress, while negatively with problem-focused coping strategies of stress. Self-esteem was negatively associated with alcohol use and avoidance coping and positively with problem-focused coping strategies of stress. Coping strategies of stress were shown to mediate the relationship of the depressive symptomatology and self-esteem with alcohol use. More specifically, it was seen that as depressive symptomatology increases, so does the adoption of avoidance coping strategies of stress and therefore the use of alcohol. Correspondingly, as self-esteem levels decrease, the utilization of avoidance coping increases, as does the use of alcohol. The above findings enrich the existing research data regarding the relationship between depressive symptomatology and self-esteem with alcohol use and the role of coping strategies. Psychoeducational interventions that focus on strengthening coping strategies of stress can help promote mental health and resilience
