Abstract Drug craving has been the latest addition to the list of symptoms for diagnosing substance use disorder, according to DSM-V. Craving has been described as an intense urge or drive to use preferred substance. In search of the causes and risk factors regarding the emergence of craving, there have been developed theoretical models on the basis of neurological evidence and psychological theory. There has also been developed a critique to the individualistic stance of the aforementioned models. Despite the extensive research on craving though, few of these research projects implement qualitative methodological approaches in studying craving. The present study aims to overcome these gaps in literature, studying for the first time craving through a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis. Six semi-structured interviews with adult substance users were carried out. After analyzing the transcripts of interviews, it was found that participants-substance users were resourcing social, medical and pleasure discourses when talking about craving. These discourses were generating different subject positions, such as the deviant, the patient, the team member and the self-responsible person. The last part of analysis is dedicated to discussing the political implications of these different discourses and identities. This study offers a new perspective in the subjective understanding of craving. The last part of the text investigates the significance of these findings, while thinking about limitations and making suggestions for future research.
