Abstract

The current Master thesis deals with the study of the painted decoration of the Church of the Holy Apostles in Kavousi, Ierapetra. The iconographic and stylistic analysis of the wall paintings is attempted in order to provide a more complete dating of the monument and its integration into the artistic production of the period. It is a typical single-nave church covered by a tiled gable roof, a type common in Crete in the 13th-15th centuries, while two layers of wall paintings (14th, first half of the 15th century) are visible today. The structure of the dissertation is the following. The first chapter is dedicated to the architecture of the church, and an examination of the church's graffiti, which are a first indication of the church's date. The second chapter deals with the arrangement of the frescoes, and the readings of all the inscriptions are also analysed in order to clarify the iconographic themes. The third chapter develops the iconographic analysis of the depictions, presented according to thematic cycles. This section describes and attempts to identify the common and specific features of the representations in comparison with other examples of Cretan wall paintings. The fourth chapter investigates the style of the programme by comparing it with other Cretan churches, with the intention of obtaining a more complete documentation of the decoration and a dating suggestion. The fifth chapter brings together the conclusions, that is, the integration of the church into the artistic production of the period.
