Abstract In recent years, a lot of information has been written about Gezi Park, which became known, not only in Turkish society but also internationally, due to the events of May-June 2013, when a new plan to redevelop this historic site was announced by the neighboring government. However, the area of the park had also been a field of ideological conflicts in the distant past. Historically, in the ottoman period there was a point of confrontation between the janissaries and the new army which was hosted in the barracks, built in the area of the current park. Later, during the kemalist period, it was neglected, lost its military glory and turned into a field of expressing new perceptions. It was essentially a symbol that contributed to the erasure of the ottoman past by the kemalist leadership and more generally by the kemalist ideology. On the one hand, there is the intense past of the landscape that magnetizes ideological challenges. On the other hand, it is its geographic location that complements and strengthens this dynamic, as it is situated on the European side of Istanbul, next to Taxim square, a central point that favors any kind of public event. This master thesis, utilizing various sources and photographic material both from the ottoman, kemalist, postkemalist time period and also original photographs (coming from personal collection) from the modern era, attempts to approach the history of the area around the current Gezi Park in Istanbul, as a multi-contested landscape.
