Abstract The subject of the present thesis is that of collecting ancient sculptures in Rome, a city famous for its artistic production ever since antiquity, during the second half of cinquecento. Even though many might argue that the case of collecting has been studied in the past by many scholars, especially when it comes to antiquity, what's different in this topic is the fact, that by contrast to the previous era, we observe a gap in bibliography about this particular period. Who collected antiquities, how were they treated and most importantly, how were the modern artists influenced by the ancient ones when it comes to the creation of new sculptures, are among of the questions that arose during the research. Focusing on examples from the Farnese and Medici collections and the work of artists such as Guglielmo della Porta (c.1515-1577) and Pietro Bernini (1562-1629), the artistic production is examined, along with the restoration that was performed on ancient sculptures.
