Abstract The subject of the thesis is to examine the importance of the merchant navy during the 1st World War (1914-1918), and the reasons behind the unrestricted submarine warfare, that systematically targeted the international sea born trade. The case study consists of a Greek shipping firm, representative of the fleet of the ocean going tramp steamers, which had a decisive impact in the Entente Allies war effort, but paid a very heavy price in both in ships and seamen lost.
