Title Σχεδίαση Πολιτισμικών Κόμβων για τον Παγκόσμιο Ιστό: Η Περίπτωση του Ιστορικού Μουσείου Κρήτης
Alternative Title Design of Caltural Web Site: The Case of Historical Museum of Crete
Author Γιαννούλια, Ειρήνη
Abstract The capabilities of new information technologies and especially of the Internet and the World Wide Web have a significant impact on the quality of relationships museums establish with their visitors and considerably enrich the debate for museums meaning and role in the 21 century. As a matter of fact, the role of the WWW in cultural information management goes beyond accessibility of remote and distributed cultural resources: it makes possible to establish a multitude of relationships between people and cultural artefacts and therefore enabling a variety of interpretations by several individuals. The main challenge in this context is the continuous reconstruction of public and private cultural collections, as well as, the creation of virtual museums according to the interests and the expectations of different groups of users/visitors. In this master thesis we propose a Web site for the Historical Museum of Crete (H.M.C.) aiming to reposition already exhibited artifacts with respect to their historical context. By directly correlating the H.M.C. exhibits with historical events, ideas, and related institutions for which these artefacts constitute useful historical sources, we intend to enrich the pedagogical role of the museum and provide to users an alternative and attractive way to learn about the history and civilization of Crete. Besides the dimension of the historical time, we also foresee a virtual navigation of users within the museum collections as actually organized in the physical space of the HMC. In this way, visitors can discover representative exhibits of the collections; find detailed documentation for each of them while having the possibility to learn more about their historical context at any time.
