Title Μια αρχαιολογική εφαρμογή σε γλώσσα XML: Διαχείριση δεδομένων από επιφανειακή και ανασκαφική έρευνα. Το παράδειγμα της Γαύδου
Alternative Title An archaeological application in XML: Manipulation of excavation and survey data. The example of Gaudos
Author Παπαδόπουλος, Γιάννης
Abstract The Gaudos survey took place during the last decade as a collaboration project of the University of Crete and the XXVth Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and had a diachronic and interdisciplinary perspective. Consequently, the collected data cover a period from prehistoric to modern times and comprise archaeological (general site data, distinct architectural and mobile finds) as well as geographic environmental, topographical and anthropological information. In order to cover the needs of this type of project an Information System has to take into account and handle such heterogeneous data. Starting therefore from the DTDs design at the ICS-FORTH, based on the printed forms of the Gavdos research group; we tried to create an information system using XML. The main reasons for choosing this language were: the ability to use "natural language", the facility to insert new elements (fields) and the limited storing space- compared to Database documents- structured documents occupy. Its hierarchical character and the possibility to define elements with attributes, allow defining better the structure of the document. The Users Interface is friendly since it resembles to that of a text editor. XSLT language offers moreover the possibility of data formatting in XSLT language offers moreover the possibility of data formatting in different ways in order to cover the needs of different users. Several Database Programs, both relational and object oriented are compatible with data structured in XML. At the same time the efforts to create a subset of XML and AnthML containing DTDs and standardised terms for use in Archeology and Anthropology are developing. This effort in combination with the work of CIDOC might lead to compatibility of inventorying archaeological objects and therefore could permit to retrieve the correct document fragments from a constantly growing volume of electronic publications
