Abstract

This dissertation deals with the depiction of the marine living world in different forms of art in the prehistoric Aegean and indeed of the Bronze Age. In an attempt to recruit as well as understand some of the factors that prompted people to transfer in large or small pictorial sets snapshots of life at sea. The study focuses on Aegean depictions of individual species, whose natural characteristics and habitats are examined, as well as human practices that concern them and are recorded archaeologically. In addition, the time horizon of the introduction of the relevant subjects in art and the emphases in their representations, as well as their geographical spread, are detected. Scenes with animated seascapes form one of the most impressive categories in any form of Aegean art in large and small-scale works. Data from their main categories of imagery are presented here. The paper focuses particularly on Crete (EM III-LM I period) and the Cyclades (EC I/ II-LC I period), with some parallel references to related artefacts of the Greek mainland (ΜΒA-LBA Ι period) and in an advanced stage of the Late Bronze Age. In the research, which was based on bibliographic data, an interdisciplinary methodological approach is attempted through elements from various fields of Archaeology, but also Anthropology and Natural Sciences.
