Title Κατασκευή Γεννήτριας Σχημάτων XML (XML Schema Generator)από το Εννοιολογικό Μοντέλο Αναφοράς CIDOC/ICOM
Alternative Title Creation of XML Schema Generator from the Conceptual Reference Model CIDOC

Abstract The integration of cultural information nowadays has turned out to be one from the more important questions of cultural management. The most significant obstacle in this process is the semantic and technical incompatibilities which appear in between the already existing information systems and the absence of common agreed semantic standards. The object-oriented reference conceptual model ICOM-CIDOC (CRM) is a domain ontology of cultural applications that explains the terms applied in the cultural documentation and their relationships and mediates in semantic level the terms already used for the documentation of cultural objects in museums. On the other hand, the XML electronic documents appear to be the most suitable data format for the creation and exchange of cultural data, because they ensure the technical interoperability between different information systems while they can be combined with more multimedia applications, preserving (in contrast with HTML) the logical structure of the data. But the XML documents can not apply semantics on data. The existence of standards like the Resource Description Framework (RDF) which has been proposed by W3C, come to bridge the gap, as the offer the possibility of ontologies? definitions for the semantics of XML documents, like ICOM-CIDOC. It is necessary though, to transform RDF ontologies to XML schemas (in the same way that we transform the conceptual to a logical design in a conventional database). For example, the exact transformation of CRM in XML data format allows us combine the advantages of relative high structure of XML data with the rich semantics of its RDF ontology. The process of transformation of CRM in XML data format is as follows: we use the CRM in RDF shema, we apply two original approaches, at which we query RDF schema with the query language RQL, we correspond the RDF classes and attributes in XML elements and finally we define the occurrence indicators and the connectiors of elements. The emerging schemas (the second in particular) ascribe with success the semantics of CRM and they are suitable for the storage and exchange of cultural information, while there are possibilities of taking certain cases of schema, which fulfill special requirements of users and present different views of cultural information. However our approaches can also be applied in different cases of transformation RDF schemas in XML documents.
