Abstract

The subject of the doctoral thesis is the institution of the byzantine family and its function in the 14th century. Through understanding the functioning of the family in the 14th century, an understanding of the social and economic conditions of that century was sought. The research is based on the decisions of the Patriarchal Synod, because deviations in relation to the family model, as it was determined by a previous legal framework, which had been formed by the State and the Church long before, reach it in the 14th century. Through the deviations from the law, it is possible to study the endurance of the family in the 14th century. The doctoral thesis was also based on the monastic archives of the 14th century. The doctoral thesis studied the following topics: marriage, aristocratic and middle-class marriage strategies, natural and artificial kinship, the function of first and last name, dowry and premarital gifts of man, the hereditary system, the economic action of women. The final purpose was to examine whether the institution of the family was stable in the 14th century, ensuring the cohesion of society.
