Abstract The main subject of this doctoral research is the institutional intervention of the Greek State in terms of the definition, constitution, reception, promotion, and dissemination of photographic images on the landscape (animate or not) views of Greece, i.e. the processes that led to the nationalization of the nature and the naturalization of the nation, as they emerged from the primary archival material collection of visual and textual sources. This material highlights what the Greek State of the early and mid-20th century (1898-1940) activated, in order to define symbolic visual representations of the national space and the concept of the homeland for the construction of visual 'narratives' of the national homogenization, the national spatial expansion and the economic growth (mainly through tourism). A secondary aim of the research was the study of the reception and inclusion of the mechanically produced image (photography) by the Greek Society and Art of the period. The main goal of the research was to investigate the origins of the domestic institutional constitution of advertising promotion at home and abroad; to examine the human networks and their role in determining the respective State choices, as well as to search for the involvement of individual actors (e.g. the photographers themselves) in the constitution and execution of the institutionally determined choices. In this context, the research examined the content of important State photography commissions such as the State series of illustrated postcards (1901-1903); the commissioning of a photographic record of Greek cultural heritage to the German Messbildanstalt (1908-1911); the important and long-lasting collaboration of the Greek State with the Swiss photographer Fred Boissonnas (1905-1930) and the promotion of the country through illustrated publications and the promotion policies of tourist services (Foreign and Exhibition Service F.E.S, Greek National Tourism Organisation G.N.O.T. and State Secretary of Press and Tourism S.P.T.) between 1911 and 1940.
