Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to present and analyse Karolos Koun's directorial engagement with the modern Greek comedy of the 19th century. Through the archival research and the historical narrative, the author interprets the reasons why Koun introduced the best-known greek comedies of the 19th century into the repertoire of the Art Theatre, the way in which he approaches the plays in terms of staging and the performances’ receival by audience and critics. At the same time, the author sheds light on the involvement of the successor of Koun's vision, George Lazanis, with the 19th century modern Greek comedy and explores the directorial affinity of the performance he curated with those staged by his teacher. The research is based on both primary sources (theatrical texts, theatre programmes, newspaper archives, reviews, photographs, documents, testimonies), as well as secondary sources (theses, studies and scientific articles).
