Abstract The present master’s thesis addresses the question of self-knowledge in Alcibiades I. In particular, it focuses on the vocabulary used by the protagonists of the dialogue as an indication of their mental state. It also aims to highlight the promotion of philosophical thought through emotions and figures of speech. The thesis is structured on the basis of the course that is followed by the dialectical research of the dialogue. Specifically, the thesis consists of three chapters based on the kind of self-knowledge that each stage of Socratic control highlights and the way of transition from one stage to another. The dialogue leads gradually and incrementally to the level of virtue-related self-knowledge, starting from the stage of cognitive self-knowledge and awareness of ignorance. In conclusion, the paper aims to bring to the surface the questions that arise at the various stages of "control" and to offer a perspective for further research on the individual questions in the Platonic corpus in general.
