Abstract

The subject of this paper is the water element, as it appears in the surviving passages of the lyric poet Bacchylides. Taking a look at the poet's work, it can easily be seen that at various points the poet uses mainly references to rivers, but not only (cf. Ode 17). Are these references from Bacchylides random or do they have an ulterior motive? Why does the poet insist so much (as, for example, in the case of the river Alpheus)? These are some of the questions that will be answered in this paper.
