Abstract |
One of the most representative attributes of Pedro Almodóvar's filmography and an integral part of his aesthetics is its mise-en-scène. Among other characteristics, the creation of the appropriate atmosphere in his films encompasses the placement of various objects -also known as props- on the set.
The present work focuses on the appearance and use of props in Almodóvar's films during the period 1999-2019. In the course of these twenty years the Spanish director collaborates with different actors than the ones in his earlier films, and, except for Madrid, he starts exploring in his shots the Spanish countryside as well.
Additionally, his characters appear more introverted, a development that is reflected into the increasingly expressive mise-en-scène of his films.
In particular, the categories of props which this work focuses on are posters, paintings, books, religious objects (including relevant elements of costume design) and some of the characters' personal items, such as photographs.
The selection of these objects was grounded on their wide and frequent use by Almodóvar in the films of the period being studied here, and the individual chapters shed light on the connection of the above props with the characters and the plot.
Through the analysis of the various objects it is ascertained that they contribute to a more profound and all-round understanding of the characters, they reflect their thoughts and sentiments, they foretell facts, they add to the plot development, while they sometimes give Almodóvar the opportunity to express indirectly his personal comment on matters that concern his era.
