Abstract With this essay, I aim to examine the various aspects of the prosaic literary representation of animals in the period 1880-1930. In the late 19th century, the long tradition of allegorical animal stories intersected with the ethnographic-folklore trends of the time and, at the same time, conversed with the emergence of the natural sciences, especially after the introduction of the Darwinian theory in Greece. At the beginning of the 20th century, the symbolic use of animals re-emerges, while at the same time, the authors become more aware and animal-friendly, exposing the injustice and mistreatment of animals. This attitude is probably reinforced by the first manifestations of the Greek environmental movement and other similar cultural-historical factors. Therefore, in this essay, I would like to present the various aspects of animals’ literary representation; allegorically as projectors of human nature, ethnographically either as companions or as exponents of popular beliefs, symbolically as metaphors for man and morally as superior or inferior beings in comparison with man. In particular, through the analysis of literary texts, in conjunction with the theoretical discourse on the spirituality and the moral value of man and animals, I would like to discuss which of the above aspects are intensified, diluted or combined over time. Afterwards, I would like to explore how writers, depending on the extra-literary context (social/historical/cultural), perceive animal nature; either as something that concerns animals exclusively or as something that permeates human beings. Finally, I would like to discuss whether the moral reflection on the exploitation and abuse of animals is sincere or whether it functions more anthropocentrically, in order to expose the authors’ reflections on issues concerning human nature and morals.
