Abstract Year 1671. John Milton publishes his last poem under the title "Samson Agonistes" There has been a lot of dicussion since then as to whether it is a poem or a play. Samson met its audience in 1743 in the form of an oratorium composed by Handel who was based on Hamilton's librette of SAmson and who in turn was based on Milton. Other than the oratorium, there had been no full scale production until the turn of the 19th century to the 20th (April 1900) when Poel mounted the first production in the history of the play. This project follows the route of "Samson Agonistes" all through the 20th century and up until the 21st, either in the form of an oratorium, opera or a full scale theatrical production.
