Abstract This paper aims to deepen the delineation of Modern Greek psychological verbs, through the thorough examination, study and interpretation of some of the most central theoretical approaches that have been formulated in the literature with the aim of analyzing this specific verb category. Based on the fact that the verbs in question, which express the emotional or psychological state that someone experiences, present a peculiar syntactic behavior when mapping the thematic roles of their definitions with the corresponding syntactic positions in which they appear (linking problem), and therefore violate the Hypothesis of the Uniform Assignment of Thematic Roles (UTAH) (Baker, 1988, 1997), combined with the fact that these specific verbs also violate the Thematic Hierarchy, both cross-linguistically and in Modern Greek, it is considered appropriate to find an adequate theoretical analysis, which can predict any peculiarities presented by the verbs in question. Given that the theoretical analyzes proposed so far adopt a purely syntactic or morphological orientation, in this work one more crucial parameter is added - semantic texture - which proves to be extremely useful and becomes a necessary condition for the interpretation and analysis of the verbs in question. Essentially, the innovative element that comes to be added by this diploma thesis, concerns the co-examination of the syntactic distribution of the verbs of mental passion combined with the th-roles that their arguments. In particular, it seems that the possibility of freely changing the roles of two-place psychological predicates, namely the Experiencer and the Theme in the structural positions of the Subject or the Object respectively, can be interpreted within a syntactically delimited framework, such as that of Belletti & Rizzi (1988) and Anagnostopoulou (1996,1999) (for Modern Greek), through the tripartite distinction of psychological structures based on their syntactic distribution, into Subject Experiencer (SE) structures, into Object Experiencer (OE) structures or in "piacere" type structures respectively, however leaves unanswered the question of where exactly this possibility of the arguments of the psychological predicates to vary freely in two different structural positions derives from. In this case, that is, a classification is proposed, without however giving a clear explanation regarding the reason for which this special property of alternative syntactic realizations arises. The answer to the said question, however, can emerge under the mirror of completely different theoretical analyses, such as these θ - roles and in particular Dowty's (1991) prime - role theory or VanValin & LaPolla's generalized θ - roles ( 1990), which predict a priori the possible realizations of the same θ-roles in alternative structural representations. Through this work, it is clarified that the interpretation of the issues raised in relation to these verbs does not fall purely on one specific linguistic level (syntactic, morphological, semantic) but is a multifaceted and multifaceted issue, the resolution of which requires a multi-level analysis, within the framework of the language layers interface. In conclusion, the present study attempts to decode the syntactic, morphological and semantic aspects of psychological verbs with the aim, on the one hand, of a critical bibliographic overview and citation of the most central theoretical approaches, and on the other hand, the extraction of relevant findings and conclusions with the aim of classifying and interpreting the psychological verbs in Modern Greek.
