Abstract In this paper I discuss the common themes related to the role of medicine and the physician, as well as the role of illness in the work of Herodotus, Hippocrates (selective study) and the surviving fragments from the corpus of Ctesias of Knidos. Furthermore, I study possible interactions between the authors, concerning the impact of climate on human health, the properties of water and madness, focusing on specific vocabulary and the narrative background. Medicine and the systematization of the medical art of the period under discussion influenced the works of historians, which is evident from their attempt both to incorporate medical terms into their work and to deal with issues that also concerned the Hippocratic physicians. Ultimately, Herodotus seems to use the art of medicine as a medium in order to achieve his historiographical goals, while for Ctesias, medicine is the central reference framework, in which historiography is being shaped.
