Abstract The current PhD dissertation focuses on Greek and French operetta libretti during the interwar period. Its research aim is to investigate and present the wider and specific libretti themes alongside the socioeconomic changes happening in Greece during the interwar period, in order to showcase their dramaturgical characteristics and to redefine their value and contribution -and subsequently the contribution of light musical theatre- to the history of contemporary Greek theatre. The primary research brought to light 127 Greek operetta libretti, previously unknown to the wider public, which have been kept in private and public archives across Greece. The thesis examines the main themes and theatrical characters found in the aforementioned libretti. More specifically, the Female theatrical character is presented in connection to the feminist movement and its efforts to improve the role of women in society, through education, work and equal rights. Similarly, the Male character is presented in parallel to politics, the arrival of refugees and socioeconomic changes in the country. Additionally, the polar opposites of Athens versus rural Greece and Wealth versus Poverty are highlighted as some of the main themes, through the presentation of the main action spaces of the plays and the comparison of lower and upper class along the special characteristics creators assign to their characters regarding their origin and social class. Moreover, the thesis examines the special characteristics of operetta: the connection to musical comedy and revue, the role of music as a co-dramatist, the thematic connections with interwar prose theatre and post-war cinema. Lastly, French operetta in Greece is presented, attempting an initial representation of the main thematics of the French operettas put on in Greece.
