Abstract

This study examines the Greek poetry anthologies that were published during the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. It focuses on the poetry anthologies categorized as popular, meaning anthologies that were addressed to a wide audience of literate people who read for pleasure rather than for educational purposes (the poetry anthologies classified as scholar are examined only in an auxiliary way). In the beginning of the 19th century, popular poetry anthologies contained mainly songs, and acted mostly as an aid of the singers’ memory. They were organized by topic (“Heroic”, “Erotic”, “Bacchic”, etc.) and the poems were published anonymously. Later on, as print culture expanded in Greece, the anthologies were enriched with poems that were not necessarily songs. In addition, the names of the poets began to appear under the title of the poems, and, towards the end of the century, short biographical sketches of the authors were included as well, together with their pictures. The notion of the poet had come to existence and the public began to recognize poetry as a form of art, not merely as song lyrics. The study records the reception of the most important Greek poets of the 19th century: Athanasios Christopoulos, Ioannis Vilaras, Dionysios Solomos, Andreas Kalvos, Alexandros Rizos Rangavis, Panagiotis Soutsos, Achileas Paraschos, Constantine Paparrigopoulos, Aristotelis Valaoritis, etc.
