Abstract

The thesis examines the repertoire of the Athenian professional prose theatrical companies of the interwar period. The primary aim was the compilation of a complete calendar of the companies' performances between 1918 and 1940 drawn from the entertainment columns of the daily press. An attempt was made to classify the plays performed according to their country of origin, the historical periods to which they belonged, their dramatic genres and their aesthetic movement. The final aim of the research was the mapping of the main trends in the dramaturgy of the time and the comprehension of the reasons that led theatre professionals (directors, impresarios, actors) towards specific choices, as well as Greek playwrights towards specific dramatic forms.
