Abstract This thesis aims to contribute to investigating the history of Modern Greek literature beyond the bounds of the canon, by focusing on the output of one particular place. It examines Heraklion on Crete, a provincial city with a lively intellectual scene even before the island was officially incorporated into the Modern Greek state (1913). Starting out from the Haleppa Pact (1878), which provided for the establishment of learned societies and printing presses, the thesis records literary and scholarly publishing and related activity up until the eve of the Battle of Crete (1941). In five chronologically ordered chapters, the study looks at overall output, aiming to link literary, critical and other works with wider developments, and to highlight the important contribution of individual and group initiatives to promoting learning. The thesis examines the development and dissemination of literacy on the local level; hubs of intellectual life and concerns over the course it took; communication networks and relations not only with the national capital, but also with other places near and far. In addition, the study maps the reception of individual works and artistic trends in national and world literature, and how budding writers and critics made use of them. The main text is accompanied by five appendices. Potted biographies of 117 individuals who contributed to intellectual life in Heraklion are followed by summary qualitative and quantitative data on individually published works, periodicals, newspapers, and, lastly, public lectures, which are often referred to as a barometer of intellectual life in the city. Despite fluctuations from time to time, throughout the period examined Heraklion emerges as a city with an active core of intellectuals and writers, who produced works that kept pace with the overall course of Modern Greek literature and criticism, engaging in creative discourse with both.
