Abstract Communicating with the divine in antiquity can take various forms. Mortals usually communicate with the gods by resorting to rituals, prayers, offerings and spectacles. In the framework of a successful communication, the gods respond in many ways, and it depends on the mortals to interpret and accept the right signals. This thesis investigates the communication between heroes and gods in Euripides' Hippolytus, including the implicit way whereby a god uses a mortal to interact with another mortal. The whole prologue of the drama sets forth the communication between gods and humans as the main subject of the work. The chapters of the thesis offer a comparative analysis of the ways in which every person in Hippolytus seeks to communicate with the gods, the probable response given by the gods, and the way in which humans comprehend divine messages. Accordingly, every dramatic persona reveals his/her personal theological perception. This thesis argues that Euripides presents the gods as mutually supplementary rather than antagonistic or hostile forces. They resemble the forces of nature; they are balanced by Zeus’ Law and balance the world of mortals. The humans ought to honor all the gods and have in their minds the μηδὲν ἄγαν. The deviation of this rule brings about a disturbance, which leads to passion and destruction.
