Abstract 'Against Timocrates' (Dem. 24) is a forensic speech written by Demosthenes for a politician named Diodorus. The prosecutor accuses Timocrates of having introduced an inexpedient law concerning the suspension of the additional penalty of imprisonment for public debtors and he, thus, brings a public action against him (graphe nomon me epitedeion theinai). The scope of this dissertation is to offer the first modern detailed commentary on the speech 'Against Timocrates' drawing on recent bibliography. The thesis consists of two main parts: a comprehensive introduction that addresses the main issues of the case and the ancient text; and a lemmatic commentary that focuses on aspects of legal history, politics, and society in 4th-century Athens while also shedding light on Demosthenes' rhetorical strategy.
