Abstract Uterine transplantation is a pioneering method that aims to solve the problem of thousands of women who suffer from infertility due to an anatomical or functional disease of their uterus. The majority of those women carry the Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, which is characterized by congenital agenesis of the uterus and the upper part of the vagina. Pregnancy for them is impossible until at least the safety and efficacy of the new method is confirmed, while motherhood is possible through surrogacy or child adoption. As an innovative method it brings optimism but also bioethical concerns due to the fusion of practices from organ transplants and techniques to assist reproduction. However, the existing alternatives are not without similar concerns. Clinical data are encouraging, with 46 children already born and 88 successful transplants, a fact which supports the establishment of uterine transplantation as the method of choice for assisted reproduction. Until then, we must keep the scientific debate and reflection alive so that we shall be prepared to prevent and confront all kinds of potential risks the future may bring. The aim of this thesis is to explore issues of autonomy with emphasis to the problem of objectification associated with the use of uterine transplantation as a method of assisted reproduction especially in the case of women whose infertility is due to Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH). In addition, uterine transplantation will be compared with surrogacy to determine whether it could be considered as a method of choice, a method with fewer bioethical concerns.
