Abstract |
As the development of technology has revolutionized the way of communication and
exchange of messages and information among modern people, it could not but affect
the field of education as well. Digital media have become part of everyday school life
and are now an almost integral part of the teaching practice. But how prepared are
teachers and students to properly manage the enormous possibilities provided by the
digital world that opens up in front of them? In what way will they manage to avoid
the "pitfalls" and discover the discourse of power that is hidden within the meanings
projected?
Educators are the ones who are called to help students to stand critically and reflect on
every idea, point of view and information they receive from digital media, but also to
act through technology for the betterment of society. But are they ready to serve such
a purpose? Do they have the necessary knowledge and skills? What are their views on
media education and its contribution to creating the future digital citizen and a more
democratic society? Finally, how does their personal critical attitude and perception
relate to the teaching of such skills?
The following research attempts to provide some answers to these questions by
illuminating unknown aspects of the Greek educational reality around the modern
digital skills of Critical Digital Literacy (CDL) and Digital Citizenship (DC).
Thorough study of the research material reveals that the teachers' perceptions and
understandings of the two concepts interact with various factors such as their prior
knowledge or training, but also their personal attitude towards digital media. In turn,
these perceptions determine the didactic practices of CDL and DC promotion in the
classroom as well as teachers' opinions regarding the contribution of digital media in
the formation of more democratic societies.
