Abstract In this thesis I will examine Kant's theory of art and poetry and its effect on Schiller. In the first part, I will present Kant's theory regarding the relationship between pleasure-sorrow and the aesthetic experience as well as the role of imagination in his theory of art and poetry. I will put emphasis on the concept of purposiveness without purpose as the foundation of the aesthetic judgment. I will insist on the analysis of the Kantian definition of this situation as "the feeling of the free play of imagination and understanding in a given representation for a cognition in general in general." Besed on the Kantian principle that beauty is not a concept of an object and the aesthetic judgment is not a cognitive judgment, I will try to shed light on the philosopher's theory of the beautiful. I will then deal with the chapters of the Critique of the Power of Judgment in which he defines the concept of genius, he correlates it exclusively to art and outlines an introductory theory of art and poetry, which was meant to influence the later philosophy of art. At first, I will investigate the relationship between nature and art in the Kantian aesthetic theory. I will refer to some passages from the Prolegomena where he deals with the concepts of barriers, limits and expansion, which I will associate with passages from the Third Critique in an attempt to show that the initial seeds of Schiller's theory lie in Kantian thought. I will then try to discuss - through Kant's theory of the beautiful and the reflective power of judgment - the hypothetical philosopher’s position on contemporary poetry criticism and the schools of creative writing. I will also try to relate the Kantian theory of the sublime in nature to the function of the aesthetic pleasure of poetry. In the second part of the paper, I will outline Schiller's theory of the play drive, I will compare it with the Kantian theory and I will argue that Schiller with his theory opens a new path in the science of Aesthetics.
