Abstract |
This paper aims at examining why lying cannot be considered as a
moral choice that invites us to overcome our disposition to act in a
selfish manner and to adopt principles that are altruistic and can be
universalized. By being a means of deliberate deception and abuse
of Reason, it amounts to deprivation of human dignity, which is a
key feature of the human person and should be respected.
Especially in the doctor-patient relationship, lying may apparently be
used for beneficence and non-harm, but it essentially deprives the
doctor of the chance to fulfill his duty of being sincere towards his
patients as regards their health status and the patient of the chance
to decide in a self-legislative way how to deal with medical
information, either to his advantage or even to the detriment of his
health. Sincerity entails more than simply a descriptive communication of truth. It means being truthful, but with discretion,
respect and sensibility and it is the only choice that meets one’s
deeper need to be able to responsibly and consciously determine the
course of one’s life. In the doctor-patient relationship, where both
parties deal with more than human pain, the specific attitude is the
only medicine for the human soul.
