Abstract

The present study aims to explore the emotion regulation strategies that adolescents and young adults with a substance use record, use to cope with their negative emotional experiences. It is also investigated whether and to what extent emotion regulation strategies are related to parental practices as perceived by adolescents and young adults, regarding the response or not to their negative emotions, through their own meaning-making and even how the intergenerational carryover of emotional dysfunction can lead to toxic emotion regulation strategies such as substance use in adolescence and young adulthood. To approach emotion regulation strategies, this study was based on the model of Zimmerman & Iwahski (2014). 10 teenagers and young adults from the addiction treatment program of KETHEA ARIADNI participated in the research. An individual semi-structured interview was conducted and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) of Gross & John (2003) was administered. Adolescents with a substance use record, were found to suppress rather than express negative emotions and that emotion regulation strategies tended to be passive rather than functional. It was also found that adolescents and young adults with a substance use record, report a lack of interest from their parents in negative emotions. In the present study it was shown that adolescents who are in the therapeutic process of drug addiction, renegotiate their relationship with parents, positively perceive the manifestation of parental interest and adopt more functional emotion regulation strategies.
