Abstract

This paper attempts to highlight the experience of parents, from the moment their child is diagnosed with a Learning Difficulty and thereafter, on a practical and psychological level. The theoretical framework is based on the conceptualization of Learning Difficulties, in Home-Based parental involvement according to Hoover-Dempsey & Sadler's theory, as well as the psychological impact that the diagnosis has on parents. The research was conducted through interviews and the analysis of the data was done using the method of thematic analysis, which aimed to highlight the rhetoric of parents regarding their involvement in studying at home, in terms of their knowledge of Learning Disabilities, as well as the feelings brought about through this experience. The results of the survey showed that parents of children with Learning Disabilities avoid getting involved with studying at home, have insufficient knowledge about Learning Disabilities and are not happy with the way the school handles their children. Finally, they reported that it is a stressful process in general, while they noted low expectations regarding their child's future academic performance due to their Learning Difficulty.
