Abstract In this M.A. thesis we will examine the question and problem of freedom in Kant's philosophy with a special emphasis on the different meanings of freedom according to Kantian philosophy. Firstly, we will investigate the positive meaning of freedom as well as its transcendental and metaphysical connotation. The main question raised is that of free will, and we will discuss the solution proposed by the philosopher in his attempt to preserve freedom and make moral responsibility possible. Equally important is the concept of freedom at the empirical level. Namely, we will explore the Kantian conception of freedom of speech, writing and thought which will lead to the question of whether freedom can be taught and enforced by law. After having examined the critical role of freedom, we can conclude that Kant deals with the issue of transcendental and empirical freedom with such consistency that these two concepts not only are not self-contradictory, but instead, they do complement each other.
