Abstract

The aim of the present empirical study was to examine the quality of adolescent friendships that exist within the internet and whether social networking sites are a means of adolescent socialization. This research was carried out in the year 2022 in high schools and high schools of Ikaria. 143 male and female students aged 12-18 on the island of Ikaria participated. Students completed (a) the friendship quality scale and (b) the social networking site use scale. Regarding friendship, the questionnaire was divided into two parts: questions related to friendship in real life and in digital life. It was found that teenagers who have a good quality of friendship in "real life" use social media less hours in comparison with adolescents who do not have enough friends or do not communicate with them often in everyday life. Teenagers who use social networking sites have better friendship quality in the digital world than in real life.
