Abstract In the Critique of Practical Reason Kant claims that the problem of moral motivation is not identical to the problem of how the moral law can provide an incentive to the action, but instead it refers to "what the moral law incites to the soul as far as it constitutes an incentive" to the action. Contrary to this claim, the majority of the modern research on the issue sets outs from the assertion that in Kant's ethics only the recognition of the moral law can constitute an incentive to the genuine moral action, while any affect of the moral law to the aesthetic predispositions of the soul, as it is the moral feeling, either is ignored or underestimated. This dissertation attempts to establish the thesis that the moral law causes the moral feeling of respect by affecting the aesthetical predispositions of the soul. The moral feeling must be considered the incentive to the genuine moral action, not the recognition of the moral law by itself alone. To bring out this central claim, this dissertation criticizes thoroughly the most influential approaches to this problem, showing by that that Kant's genuine view on moral motivation is often overlooked or even misunderstood. The central thesis of this dissertation is that Kant's intention is not to relate intrinsically the agent's conscience of the moral law to the maxims of his executive will, but rather to the causing of the moral feeling. In order for the moral law to be the decisive maxim of the action, the main prerequisite is its recognition as the only objective law to affect the aesthetical predispositions of the soul, and especially the moral feeling itself.
