Abstract |
Background: The translation and cultural adaptation of psychometrically tested tools
is regarded as an essential component of effective human resource management in the
public health care and especially in the tertiary settings. The Work Extrinsic, Intrinsic
Motivation Scale (WEIMS) is a valid instrument designed to measure work
motivation in organizations.
Aim: The aim of this study is 1) to describe the translation, adaptation and validation
of the WEIMS questionnaire into Greek language in a sample of specialized nurses in
Intensive Care Units (ICU) and Operating Theatres of a universal hospital and 2)
identify the motivators for doing that work and correlate them with descriptive
variables of age, sex, level of education, years of experience and ward.
Methods: A modified version of the English self-administered questionnaire
consisting of 18-items was used. Internationally recommended methodology
mandating forward, backward translation, reconciliation and pretesting steps were
followed. Reproducibility was measured (test – retest reliability) by the Spearman
correlation coefficient. Internal consistency of the items assessed using the
Cronbach’s alpha. Construct validity were assessed with correlation of the subscales
by the Spearman coefficient. Discriminant validity were assessed.
Results: The psychometric properties of the Greek version of the WEIMS
questionnaire for nursing staff employed in a tertiary hospital were good. Reliability
with test – retest was satisfying, most of the items had positive correlations.
Cronbach’s alpha was found to be from 0,60-0,80. The subsales measuring
autonomous motivation (intrinsic motivation, integrated regulation and identified
regulation) had significant positive correlations and subscale of amotivation had

significant negative correlation with intrinsic motivation subscale and the Work Self
–Determined Index. The higher score was in the intrinsic motivation scale mean=
3,82 SD 0,78 and the lowest in the subscale amotivation mean= 1,87 SD 0,78
Conclusions: The translated and adapted Greek version is comparable with the
original English questionnaire as it concerns the validity and reliability. We assessed
it in a sample of nurses and extract useful conclusions for their motivation. It could be
a useful tool in the hands of administrations for identifying the types of nurse’s
motivation and implement successful strategies of empowerment.
