Abstract |
Background: Schizophrenia remains one of the leading causes of disability worldwide,
which puts a significant burden on patients, their families and society. Especially after
the psychiatric reform, the burden of care shifted to the family where most as the unique
support system of patient burdened financially, socially and psychologically. This burden
may be higher in periods of severe socio- economic crisis.
Aim: To estimate the burden of individuals and family members who care for persons
suffering from schizophrenia at the time of economic crisis.
Study Design: Designed a crossover epidemiological study (cross - sectional study) in
the geographic region of Heraklion in urban, suburban and rural areas. The reference
population was family members or other relatives who cared for patients with schizophrenia
(F20#) and was registered to the Center for Mental Health Heraklion (K.P.S.Y)
from 2011 to 2013.
Methods: We used a questionnaire Assessment Form (Involvement Evaluation Questionnaire)
to assess the burden on carers and the Royal Free for religious and spiritual
beliefs, which have been translated and weighed in Greek language.
Results: The majority of caregivers consisted of relatives of whom 63.8 % were parents,
with an average age of 56.2 years (SD = 12.7) outnumbering females. Most caregivers
lived with the patient (72.3%) with a personal touch more than 32 hours a week
(78.7%).

psychological distress in relation to the load of burden, age and education of the caregiver,
gender and age of patients.
