Abstract

The study of safety issues of pupils and teachers during their staying in school environments are essential for the development of effective prevention programs. In this paper we investigated aspects of this issue in schools and teachers in the city of Heraklion. Specifically, we investigated the application of security regulations, risk factors, frequency and type of accidents, technical failures and operational needs of schools and teachers’ training on prevention-first aid. The collection of data was performed using two questionnaires. The survey involved 25 school units (10 elementary schools, 5 junior high schools, 5 high schools and 5 special schools) and 93 teachers (32 Directors 25 Deputy Directors and 36 physical education teachers). The main findings are: accidents, among of which dominate limb injuries occur mainly to boys, during breaks, and are judged as plenty in one quarter of the schools. The training of all teachers is low and is considered necessary. Although most schools are of a small age, they have many shortcomings and weaknesses such as: inadequate playground areas which are below the official standards, athletic constructions without security, dangerous pedestrian crossings, inadequate protection of school units in case of an emergency (earthquake, fire), and unsuitable stairs. The maintenance of the premises is considered lacking or incomplete.
