Abstract Introduction. Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disease that is caused from the insufficiency of insulin. Its complications are acute and chronic. Objective. The study of quality of life at patients with diabetes mellitus in countries of Europe. Methods. They have been used data from 27.444 individuals, aged 50+ years, participating in the first wave of the SHARE survey (the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe, 2004/5). There was random eligibility of the participants by using multivariate sampling and they were coming from 11 European countries which were: Denmark, Sweden, Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Greece. Estimations were based on weights according to the complex sampling design. Results. The prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus was 10,7% (95% CI 9,9-11,6). Switzerland was the country with the lowest prevalence (5,3%) and Spain with the highest (13,4%). The total score for mean Quality of Life (CASP-12) for the participants with Diabetes was 21,21 and for the participants without Diabetes was 21,39. According to high Quality of Life (CASP-12 27+) and Diabetes Mellitus, Danish has been found to have the highest prevalence (15,6%) of high Quality of Life and French the lowest (3,6%)(p>0,05). In Greece only 8,6% of participants with Diabetes Mellitus had high Quality of Life. Conclusions. There was no significant difference in quality of life according to CASP-12 among participants with diabetes and participants without. There was also no significant difference in the high score quality of life among the participants with diabetes between the participating European countries. But there was significant Public Health & Health Care Management Faculty of Medicine – University of Crete 7 difference in the high score quality of life between participants without Diabetes Mellitus. North countries had better quality of life compared to Middle and South European countries. These results provide useful data that can be used in planning health and community policies in the European countries.
