Abstract Introduction Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia from which a large percentage of the population suffers. It is an important public health issue, particularly for specific populace groups. The root causes of iron deficiency anemia are reduced iron intake or increased iron loss. A determinant factor of these causes is increased iron demand, commonly occurring during pregnancy or lactation in neonates especially preterm deliveries. Reduced iron intake in children may be attributed to an iron poor diet. Aim: This postgraduate thesis aims to assess the presentation of iron deficiency anemia in Cretan children, aged 5 – 8 years, as well as investigating the correlation of iron deficiency anemia to the children’s dietition. Method: The first sample group comprised first year primary school children from the prefectures of Heraklion, Rethymnon and Chania of the school year 1992 – 1993. The second sample group comprised pre-school children from the prefecture of Chania from the 2004 – 2005 school year. All children were aged 5 – 7. Data analysis was conducted using the IBM SPSS programme. Results: No differentiation was found over time in the frequency of iron deficiency anemia presenting between the two sample groups. Data was derived from 1093 children with normal hematological rates (Hgb΄&γε11,5 ή/και Hct΄&γε34,5) and 102 children with iron deficiency anemia (Hgb΄&λτ11,5 ή/και Hct΄&λτ34,5 και MCV΄&λτ80 with positive Mentzer rates). Data analysis indicated that iron deficiency anemia in the 5 – 7 age group is unrelated to sex and Body Mass Index. As far as dietition is concerned, it was observed that children with iron deficiency anemia had a higher calcium intake, however consumed less meat and dietary fiber. Conclusions: During 2004 – 2005, deterioration in dietition is noted (higher percentage of overweight or obese children, increase of children with low ferritin). In 2004 – 2005 a slight decrease in the percentage of children with iron deficiency anemia, possibly due to the administration of iron supplements and not as a result of intake of food rich in iron. The probability of iron deficiency anemia presenting is unrelated to sex for children aged 5 – 8.
