Abstract Background: The adherence to Mediterranean diet has been considered as a protective factor toward depressive symptoms and sleep disorders. Objectives: The objective of the present study is to investigate the association of adherence to Mediterranean diet with the development of depressive symptoms and sleep disorders in pregnancy. Methods: The present study considered as a part of the Mother- Child cohort Crete, “Rhea” study. The study sample mainly included 837 women who participated in the study from the first trimester of pregnancy. In order to estimate maternal dietary habits a structured questionnaire (Food Frequency Questionnaire, FFQ) was used, while the adherence to Mediterranean diet was evaluated through a calculated scale (Mediterranean Diet Score, MedDiet Score). (Mediterranean Diet Score, MedDiet Score) was used. (Mediterranean Diet Score, MedDiet Score) was used. For the detection of depressive symptoms during pregnancy the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was chosen. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were performed after adjusting for confounders (maternal nationality, age, marital status, education, existence of other children in family, husband’s age). Results: The majority of pregnant women were Greek (91%) and belonged in the age group of 26-35 years old (66,4%). Only the 12% of the study sample had a high adherence to Mediterranean Diet during pregnancy (MedDiet Score ≥6). The prevalence of depressive symptoms (EPDS≥13) during pregnancy was 14,8% while 6,8% of women reported less than 5 hours of daily sleep. The adherence to the Mediterranean diet was not associated with depressive symptoms and sleep duration in pregnancy. Conclusion: Diet followed in pregnancy is not correlated to maternal depression and sleep duration.
