Abstract Introduction: The equal and universal access to effective medical care and use of health services is a primary objective of the Greek health system. In 2010, the economic downturn in Greece with the implementation of austerity measures led to a dramatic increase in unemployment and poverty. Socially vulnerable groups such as irregular migrants, the uninsured, the unemployed are most affected by the negative impact of the economic crisis, leading to deterioration of health and increased obstacles to their access to health care. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the secondary healthcare services access experiences of uninsured natives and immigrants in two urban environments of Greece. Methods: Qualitative exploratory method chosen for the purpose of work. The present study was based on 21 in-depth interviews in uninsured immigrants and natives living in two urban contexts in Greece. The majority of participants approached socially surgeries in Athens and Heraklion, Crete. Qualitative data were analyzed according to the principles of content analysis. Results: Uninsured reported difficulties in accessing health care, leading to delay or waiver of necessary medical care or seeking alternative health strategies. The high cost and lack of insurance coverage reported as primary barriers to access. Here are the limited medical rights, the complex bureaucratic procedures, long waiting times, the attitude of health professionals, language and cultural barriers in terms of migrant population, insufficient knowledge about the health system and the services available and finally the lack of knowledge rights. Conclusions: The uninsured population has to overcome a number of obstacles to access to care. These barriers lead to a search for alternative strategies to meet health needs, have negative effects on their health and on the effectiveness of the health system, the quality that the services offered.This study highlights the need for policies and guidelines that are Public Health & Health Care Management Faculty of Medicine – University of Crete 4 consistent with international law on human rights, will result in ensuring access to health care for vulnerable groups that are excluded from the health system.
