Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the indigenous knowledge about herbs used for cosmetic care and treatment of skin, to Kastelli of Crete. The second aim was to identify the local name of herbs with Latin, through M.A.I.CH. and Natural History Museum of Crete. Finally, was researched to bibliography about the properties of herbs. In this study participated with face to face interviews, in total 19 people and they were supplement semi-structured questionnaires. Thereafter, were harvested plants using participants for therapeutic and cosmetic care of skin, which helped in the identification of plant names, with the widely known, their Latin name. One of the main findings of the study was that almost all the people knew and used the herbs, to cure and protect the skin. Searching the literature for the mentioned herbs found that most of them agree with the results of this study. In conclusion, this local study on Kastelli of Crete, revealed herbs, high interest to promote skin health and required other studies to answer several questions raised by the findings of this study.
