| Abstract |
Background: The translation and cultural adaptation of tested tools is regarded as an essential component of effective human resource management in the public sector and especially in the tertiary settings. The relationship between nurse and patient as a complex interaction has been only in the past ten years a subject of studies. This relationship is regarded to be special and unique and through it vital information and often intense feelings are carried.
Aim: The aim of this study is 1) to describe the translation, adaptation and validation of the NQCPQ questionnaire into the Greek language in a sample of nurses in surgical clinics of a university hospital and 2) to describe to what extent the desired communication between nurse- patient is achieved, relative to a variety of procedures during hospitalization and to associate it with descriptive characteristics: age, sex, educational level, years of service and clinic.
Methods: A modified version of the English questionnaire consisting of 25 items was used. Internationally recommended methodology mandating forward, backward translation, reconciliation and pretesting steps were followed. Reproducibility was measured (test- retest reliability) by the

Spearman correlation coefficient. Internal consistency of the items assessed using the Cronbach’s alpha.
Results: Communication between nurses and patients in a tertiary hospital and surgical clinics is good. The internal reliability through the test- retest control was very good and most of the items had positive correlations. Cronbach’s alpha was found to be 0,972 (total estimate). The highest rating was achieved in the quality section of the communication target for cases followed predetermined medication from the doctor, mean=4.06 and SD=1.08, while the lowest occurred in the same section for communication aimed at the care of patients, mean=3.82 and SD=0.96.
Conclusion: The translated and adapted Greek version is comparable with the original English questionnaire as it concerns validity and reliability. The application into a sample of nurses revealed conclusions about the level of communication with the patients. It could be a useful tool in the hands of administrations for handling conflict situations and therefore for achieving the best working conditions among nurses and effective treatment for patients
