Abstract Trachoma is an infectious disease caused by the gram(-) bacteria Chamydia trachomatis. It is the most common cause of blindness in the world. It is a disease that has survived from ancient times until today. The history of trachoma in the 20th century is remarkable and a description of the epidemiological dimensions of the disease around the world is needed. The control of this ancient scourge continues to be a challenge even today.
