Abstract |
Introduction: Health professions have a distinct character and job satisfaction within the sector is related to the physical and mental health of nurses as well as to the quality of service. In the last few years, this has been the matter of intensive research work globally.
Prolonged stressful situations are to blame for the appearance of “occupational diseases” such as work-related stress, chronic fatigue and the burn-out syndrome.

Aim: The present study is aiming at: 1) investigating the satisfaction of nurses’ expectations from their work. In other words, whether nurses’ expectations were met by their choice of profession or not.
2) Exploring whether the level of satisfaction of nurses’ expectations affects the exercise of their duties or not.
Methodology: The population of the study was the nursing staff of all levels working at a general hospital. A weighed questionnaire was used comprising two sections of close-ended questions. The first section consisted of 11 questions relating to demographic and occupational characteristics of the population under study. The second section consisted of 9 sets of questions on occupational satisfaction. The questionnaire was answered anonymously and the creators of the questionnaire were asked to give their permission for its use. Parametric and non-parametric tests were conducted for the statistical processing of data. The level of statistical significance was a=5% and data analysis was conducted using the statistical package SSPS 21.0.
Results: The occupational satisfaction of the participants focused on factors such as their relationship with the patients and the particularities of their working activities and the dissatisfaction factors included low income, unfavourable working conditions and lack of prospects of development.
An increase in the number of nursing personnel and of their income, the enhancement of primary health care as far as organizational issues are concerned and continuous training are considered to be the most important factors for the improvement of the

hospital’s operation. Last, the state of both the hospital in which the study was conducted and of Greece’s hospitals in general was described as average.
Conclusions: The questionnaire which was used in our study seems efficient enough to portray the levels of satisfaction of the nursing personnel and to assess at what level those expectations have been met.
We consider necessary to continue the process of assessing job satisfaction.
We also consider essential to train nursing personnel and other health care professionals in the use of similar questionnaires. Hospital administrators should make the most of the results of the present study and of other similar studies in order to motivate personnel and to deliver high quality health care services.
