Abstract Background: Diabetes mellitus type II is one of the most costly chronic diseases and micro-and macrovascular complications causing a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Aim: This study aims to highlight the importance of enhancing self-care (self-management) and education of people with diabetes mellitus type II. Research Design: Systematic Literature Review. Methods: Searching electronic databases and selected websites. More specifically search-ing for studies involved in self-care of diabetes mellitus type II in Greece, last decade (2002-2012) in adults. Furthermore, manual electronic research was selected from medical journals about Diabetes Mellitus type II in IATROTEK specifically in Greek language. All data collected and used in accordance to specific criteria set by the researcher. Critical review of those data, regarding their quality and validity was performed and final conclusions were drawn. Results: Exported data which appeared useful about the importance of continuous educa-tion and empowerment of people with diabetes mellitus type II in order to be able to self-manage as efficiently as possible to their disease. An important role in this direction seemed to have health professionals and the state, which is taking steps education and health promotion, will make individuals with type II to adopt a new lifestyle, which will improve their quality of life, biochemical results and their psychological state. Conclusion: Many questions remain unanswered and deserve the attention of health pro-fessionals, researchers, politicians and public bodies to identify effective evidence-based in-terventions. It also requires greater involvement in this direction of the state, with a policy that will help and encourage all those involved in diabetes mellitus type II in order to enhance self-management of patients through educational programs and promotion programs health.
