Abstract Background: As years pass and reaching the age of retirement, many older people are more engaged in the provision of care and support to dependent family members or friends, which has been found to bear a burden on their physical and mental health and thus affect to their use of health services. Purpose: Σhe main purpose of this study is to determine if there is an association between the physical and mental health of caregivers aged 50+, with caregiving and health care use. Methods: The data of this study were drawn from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE, 2004. Wave 1, Release 2.3.0) which has ensured a unique source of information on the health of individuals aged 50 and over. For the purposes of the current study, the analysis was restricted to the Greek sample of the survey which comprised 1932 participants. The research tools were the electronic CAPI questionnaire . Δημόσια Υγεία & Διοίκηση Υπηρεσιών Υγείας Τμήμα Ιατρικής – Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης 4 Results: Approximately thirty-nine percent (39,4%) of caregivers had more than two chronic diseases, versus 64.8 % of those receiving care and the 35,6 % of those who had no giving or receiving care (p&Λτ0.05). The care recipients were more likely to develop two or more symptoms of physical problems (OR = 2,09, p΄&λτ0.05), and display symptoms of depression (OR = 1,74, p΄&λτ0.05). Similarly, caregivers had significantly higher OR 1,45 for depression (95% CI :1,09-1,92), as for having visited a doctor more than twice in the last 12 months (OR = 1,53, 95% CI: 1.13 to 2.08). However, a non-significantly lower probability of 55% for hospitalization was found for caregivers (95% CI :0,13-1, 54) and higher (94%) for care recipients (OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 0.89 - 4.21). Conclusions: There was an association of physical and mental health of people aged 50+ with caregiving. Caregivers appear to be affected, since they were found to suffer from chronic diseases and show depressive symptomatology. The interaction of physical and mental health highlights the necessity to ensure opportunities for: a. help and emotional support of caregivers and b. better physical and mental health so that to enable older people to continue to participate actively in society and to age in healthy and active conditions.
