Abstract Introduction: Breastfeeding is considered to confer many benefits to infants’ and mothers’ health. Social capital is suggested to have a close connection with a variety of health outcomes. There is little evidence in the existing literature whether maternal social capital might be associated with breastfeeding initiation. Methods: The present study was conducted within the prospective Motherchild study in Crete (Rhea study). 493 mothers were included in the analyses. Data were collected through the 12th and 30th weeks of gestation questionnaires, as well as, the 6th and 18th month postpartum questionnaires. Women self-completed the Social Capital Questionnaire at about the 24th week of gestation. Linear and Logistic regression models were performed to estimate the association of maternal social capital with breast-feeding practice after controlling for potential confounders. Results: Mothers in the medium social capital group had higher odds in having breastfed their child (OR=2.43, 95% CI=1.13, 5.23), after adjustment for potential confounders. Mothers who rated at the higher level in the factor Tolerance to Diversity, had 4 times higher odds in having breastfed their child (OR=4.00, 95% CI= 1.31,12.20). Conclusions: Results are highly suggestive that social capital may affect breastfeeding initiation. Nevertheless, further investigation is necessary so as to additionaly explore the association between maternal social capital and breastfeeding practices.
