Abstract |
Background: In Crete the problem of traffic accidents is particularly important. Each
day happens at least one, which leads to the death or to the serious wound of at least
one individual.
Objectives: the recording of the incidence rate of the road traffic accidents with at
least one wounded in Crete and the demographic characteristics (age, sex, nationality,
profession) of the persons involved in those, so that useful conclusions will be carried
out in order to prevent this so important problem of public health.
Methods: information of road traffic accidents with at least one lightly wound
individual, at year 2008, from the autopsies of the incidents, has been collected.
Results: At the analysis were examined not only the characteristics of the traffic
incidents (201), but also the characteristics of the individuals involved in those (393).
From the 55 traffic accidents were lethal and led to the death of 64 individuals.
Because of the underwriting of the data regarding to the profession of the involved
individuals was not achieved correlation of road accidents with social, economic and
educational status of the wounded. Statistically important correlations however are
observed with regard to the gravity of wound with the sex and the nationality of the
guilty driver, the prefecture, the locality and the season where the accident was
carried out. The crude mortality rate of road traffic accidents in Crete (2008), was
found 10.7 per 100,000 residents. The age and sex specific mortality rate of traffic
accidents in Crete, (in 2008) reaches the top at the age of 15-24 (20.43 per 100,000
residents) in men and at the age group of 25-39, (3.59 per 100,000 residents) in
women. The age and sex specific morbidity rate due to traffic accidents, reaches the
top in men at the age group of 15-24 (43.13 per 100,000 residents) and in women at
the same age group (18.16 per 100,000 residents).

Conclusions: it appearred that in small ages the danger of death and wound from road
traffic accident is increased. The danger is also increased when the accident happens
in regional roads instead of the roads inside the cities and the Northern National Road
of Crete. Studies should follow, focused at the age groups and in the regions where
the problem is more intense so that conclusions suitable to support programs of
prevention and intervention will be carried out.
